The Meguro river stretches from Tokyo bay to Meguro ward. It is actually a concrete canal and not the most natural setting where one might expect to fine many cherry trees. However, there is a stretch of several hundred meters between Meguro and Nakameguro stations that is lined with about 800 plush cherry trees. This makes for an excellent promenade where hanami lovers gather & celebrate each spring.
The cherry trees here seem almost overloaded under the weight of the blossoms as the tips of the branches are pulled down almost touching the water. There is something strangely beautiful about the bright blossoms set against the dark water and concrete of the canal below. A stark contrast of bright color against grey and the mix of natural beauty and the dullness of man-made materials. For the ultimate “after dark” hanami experience checkout the lanterns and sakura lit up at night.
The Meguro river is accessible from both Meguro & Nakameguro stations.
